SunEthanol Raises US $25M for Cellulosic Ethanol Technology
SunEthanol has raised US $25 million in Series B financing from a consortium including BP and Soros Fund Management LLC and is changing its name to Qteros. The new name refers to its breakthrough Q Microbe technology for producing sustainable liquid fuel from non-food plants and wastes.
Gov. Schwarzenegger Looks To Advance California's Renewable Energy Plans
Building on his commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the state's renewable energy capacity, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Executive Order S-14-08 (EO) to streamline California's renewable energy project approval process and increase the state's Renewable Energy Standard to 33 percent renewable power by 2020.
Renewable Fuel Standard Increased for 2009
The 2009 U.S. federal renewable fuel standard (RFS) will be increased to 10.21 percent ensuring that at least 11.1 billion gallons of renewable fuels will be blended into transportation gasoline. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) established the annual overall renewable fuel volume targets, reaching a level of 36 billion gallons in 2022.
Thoughts on an Energy Policy for the New Administration
This country needs a good debate on energy policy. While there are many divergent views on what that policy should be, I thought it would be useful to begin my thoughts by identifying a set of "facts" on which most people can agree. So here goes.
US Sugar to Explore Building 100M Gallon Coskata Ethanol Plant
U.S. Sugar Corp. announced that it has entered into an agreement with Coskata Inc. to explore building a 100 million gallon per year cellulosic ethanol facility in Clewiston, Florida. The facility would be the world's largest second generation ethanol facility. It would convert left-over sugar cane material into ethanol.
FTSE Expands Environmental Index Series
FTSE Group, the global index company, announced the expansion of the FTSE Environmental Opportunities Index Series with the addition of nine new indices. Launched in July 2008, the series is derived from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series and includes companies with at least 20% of their business derived from environmental markets and technologies.
Less Strain on Renewable Energy Than Other Sectors
What a difference two months can make. Back in September, it seemed like every journalist covering energy issues wanted to write about the "green" boom. Now, with the precipitous drop in the price of oil and the increasing scope of the credit crunch, many journalists are taking a less optimistic approach and writing about renewables as if the industry was in survival mode.

Internal combustion engines are inherently inefficient due to friction and pumping losses. After a century of evolution gasoline engines in cars are still typically only 21% efficient! Electric motors have no such limitations and are actually capable of 98% efficiency including electronic control losses! Why do we keep wasting our precious fuel on such an inefficient system? The answer is energy storage.

Vital Renewable Energy Company (VREC), a new Brazilian company, announced that it has secured funding from private investors in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. The company said that is ready to launch renewable energy projects in Brazil, focused mainly on ethanol and electricity generation.
Covanta Reopens Tulsa Waste-to-Energy Facility
Covanta Energy announced the reopening of the Walter B. Hall Resource Recovery Facility, a waste-to-energy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The facility, which can process up to 1,125 tons of municipal solid waste per day and generate 240,000 pounds of steam per hour, is currently accepting commercial and residential household waste for processing into energy.
Beacon Power Scales Back Flywheel Plans
Beacon Power Corporation, a company that designs and develops products and services to support electricity grid operation, said that it plans to scale back its previously announced plans for a 5-megawatt flywheel based energy storage system.
Solix Biofuels Completes US $10.5M Series A Funding Round
Solix Biofuels, an energy technology firm focused on algae-based intermediates for fuel and chemical production, announced that it has raised US $10.5 million in its first round of outside funding. The company also said that it has reached an agreement with investors for an additional commitment of US $5 million, to be used to build an algae biofuel facility near Durango, Colorado.
