Pin Mixers / Pin Agglomerators

The FEECO Pin Agglomerator (pin mixer) is comprised of a cylindrical stationary casing which houses an axial rotor extending the full length of the casing. Extending outward from the rotor are numerous rods or pins that are adjustable to keep the clearance between the pin tip and the inner casing to a minimum. A constant speed motor spins the rotor at several hundred RPMs. The motion and speed of material traveling though a pin mixer at high rotational speeds eliminates air, and reduces the water volume between particles.

This rotational or spinning action, by the pins is the same action which produces pelletizing in a disc pelletizer, except that it is much more intense. The intensity of the action eliminates air and reduces the water volume between the particles. The densification is normally many times that of a disc. The FEECO Pin Agglomerator can produce more in the way of densification with less binder and much less horsepower than any other agglomerator. The pin mixer is also a good choice as a pre-conditioner in a two stage agglomeration process involving a disc pelletizer.

FEECO Pin Mixers lend themselves well to completely automated systems. They feature accurate feed ratios of powder to liquid for precise quality control and accurate production rates. Controls are housed in a custom designed control panel.

Pin Mixers or pin agglomerators are a high-speed, high-energy mixer consisting of an axial rotor and pins which efficiently mixes and agglomerates fine particles into workable, easy-to-handle micropellets. Pin Mixers are the tools of choice when the job is the treatment of coal dust, fly ash, carbon black, pigments, and other fine particle matter.

Material fines such as fly ash, or grain dust are introduced at the inlet end by a screw feeder, while a liquid injection pump meters the desired blend of liquid and binders at the required feed rates. After thorough mixing of the binder and particles takes place inside the Pin Mixer, the actual pelletizing begins. The action of the pins against the casing along with the addition of the binder material causes the powdered material to form pellets. This same pin action also imparts a centrifugal force, driving the material against the inner shell wall. The pellets continue to grow in size until emerging from the pin agglomerator at the desired size.
